Academic Core Competencies
Greenville Technical College’s general education curriculum is derived from the college’s core competencies, a set of skills, knowledge, and behaviors identified as critical to the success of GTC students.
Communication Core Competency - Students will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills to convey information, ideas, or opinions.
- Written Communication: Students will demonstrate effective written communication skills to convey information, ideas, or opinions.
- Oral Communication: Students will demonstrate effective oral communication skills to convey information, ideas, or opinions.
Critical Thinking Core Competency - Students will demonstrate effective reasoning, problem-solving, or quantitative skills to develop an opinion or conclusion.
- Critical Reasoning: Students will employ inquiry, analysis, and synthesis of information to formulate and/or evaluate an opinion or conclusion.
- Problem-solving: Students will design and formulate a strategy to answer a question or achieve a desired goal.
- Quantitative Reasoning: Students will analyze numerical information or observable facts resulting in informed conclusions.
- Creative Thinking: Students will demonstrate the capacity to combine or synthesize existing ideas, images, or expertise in original ways and the experience of thinking, reacting, and working in an imaginative way characterized by a high degree of innovation, divergent thinking, and risk-taking.
Information Literacy Core Competency - Students will locate, evaluate, and use information effectively from diverse sources.
Accreditation
Greenville Technical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate and baccalaureate degrees. Greenville Technical College also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. Governing Boards
The SC State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education (SBTCE) has statewide governance authority for the Technical Education System in the South Carolina Technical College System. The system is comprised of 16 technical colleges located strategically across the state and two internationally renowned statewide programs: ReadySC and Apprenticeship Carolina. The SC Technical College System is committed to helping increase the employability of all South Carolinians by ensuring they are fully prepared for the careers of today and tomorrow.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHE) is the regulatory body for all South Carolina state-supported postsecondary education institutions, including technical and comprehensive educational institutions.
As the governing body of the college, the Greenville Technical College Area Commission (or Area Commission) is responsible for the development and operation of Greenville Technical College in accordance with 1962 Code Article 18 Title 59-53-10-168;1500-1520 as last amended by Act 49 in 2015 and the standards set forth by the CHE and the (SBTCE).
