Placement and Testing Center

Students applying for admission to Greenville Technical College’s degree, diploma, or certificate programs must complete an academic review to determine course placement. This process is referred to as multiple measures, which includes a review of high school GPA and school coursework, ACT/SAT scores, Advanced Placement Testing (AP) scores, International Baccalaureate (IB) scores, and GED (math only) score within the last ten years. Students not meeting one of those criteria may take the program required college-level English or math course with a co-requisite course or take the NextGen Accuplacer placement test. Multiple measures provide an accurate and equitable measure of student ability to avoid unnecessary remediation for beginning college-level math and English courses. 

Early College at Greenville Technical College is available to any qualifying student of high school age in our service area (Greenville County). Early College students must meet placement requirements and are not eligible to take English or math courses that require a co-requisite.  Students who are younger than 16 may have additional requirements, so please contact the Early College office for information. 

ENGLISH PLACEMENT

The English department at Greenville Tech offers two entry-level English courses,ENG 101 English Composition I*  and ENG 165 Professional Communications . Students should work with their advisor to determine the appropriate English course required for their program of study.

To be placed directly into ENG 101 English Composition I*, students must meet specific multiple measures criteria (high school GPA and coursework, ACT/SAT scores, AP scores, or IB scores) within the last ten years. An advisor will work with each student to determine placement eligibility. Students not meeting one of those criteria may take a co-requisite course or take the NextGen Accuplacer placement test.

Students not meeting the ENG 101 English Composition I* direct placement criteria will be required to take ENG 101 English Composition I* with a one-credit hour co-requisite course ENG 012 Developmental English Workshop.

Students enrolling in programs that require ENG 165 Professional Communications will be directly placed into ENG 165 Professional Communications.

MATH PLACEMENT

The math department at GTC offers several math courses. Program departments determine the math course required for students. Students should work with their advisor to determine the appropriate math course required for their program of study.

To be placed directly into a designated college-level math course, students must meet specific multiple measures criteria (high school GPA and coursework, ACT/SAT scores, AP scores, IB scores, or GED score) within the last ten years. An advisor will work with each student to determine placement eligibility. Students not meeting one of those criteria may take a co-requisite course or take the NextGen Accuplacer placement test.

Students who do not meet the direct math placement criteria for their program will be required to take an associated co-requisite course.  See courses and associated co-requisites below.

  • MAT 103 Quantitative Reasoning – Quantitative Reasoning with a one-credit hour associated co-requisite course MAT 013 Developmental Mathematics - Compressed
  • MAT 109 College Algebra with Modeling – College Algebra with a two-credit hour associated co-requisite course MAT 019 Developmental Mathematics Workshop I.
  • MAT 110 College Algebra* – College Algebra with a two-credit hour associated co-requisite course MAT 020 Developmental Mathematics Workshop II.
  • MAT 120 Probability and Statistics* – Probability and Statistics with a one-credit hour associated co-requisite course MAT 012 Developmental Mathematics Workshop.

Students enrolling in programs requiring MAT 155 Contemporary Mathematics , MAT 170 Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry I , MAT 211 Math for Elementary Education I , or MAT 215 Geometry  will be directly placed into the course without a co-requisite course. 

Placement into MAT 111 College Trigonometry* , MAT 130 Elementary Calculus* , MAT 140 Analytical Geometry and Calculus I* , or MAT 141 Analytical Geometry and Calculus II* –  requires a specific high school GPA and coursework or Next Generation Accuplacer score. The student should consult with their advisor regarding placement requirements.

PLACEMENT TEST

The placement test is a computerized, adaptive test used to assess reading, writing, and math skills. The test is not timed; however, it takes an average of two (2) hours to complete. It is offered Monday through Friday. Students who are required to take a co-requisite course with math and/or ENG 101 English Composition I* based upon the results of multiple measures review may take the placement test in an effort to exempt the co-requisite course.

Entry into the college does not guarantee admission to the program desired by the applicant. Placement in a specific course is based on standards that will help to ensure the applicant’s success.

The college reserves the right to modify admission policies and procedures as needed.

The Placement Testing Center also administers the following tests:

  • TEAS test – Test on a walk-in basis. Check in to test Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The test fee is $65.
  • Computer Readiness test – The test is on a walk-in basis and not timed. But the average completion time is 30 minutes.
  • WIN Ready to Work Assessment – Test on a walk-in basis. The Placement Testing Center gives the WIN test at 8:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. This is a timed test with three 55-minute sections. The test fee is $30 for all three sections or $10 per section.

Academic Testing Center

The Greenville Technical College Testing Center is located on the second floor of the Dreisbach/Anderson Student Success Center (Barton Campus, Building 102, Suite 200). The Testing Center provides professional test proctoring services in a well-equipped, testing environment where students may complete placement tests, academic tests, exams, comprehensive examinations, and national examinations.

Any student completing academic testing in the Testing Center must have a reservation scheduled between the instructor and testing staff. Any testing dates outside of the reservation must be approved by the instructor and testing staff prior to the test date. Students that live more than 50 miles from Greenville Technical College may request an off-site proctor following the Testing Center guidelines. It is the student’s responsibility to locate a certified proctoring site for approval and pay any charges required by the proctor location.
