TRIO Student Support Services (SSS)

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is one of the federally funded TRIO programs.  The program’s objectives are to:

  1. increase retention and graduation rates among eligible students;
  2. increase the transfer rate of eligible students from two-year to four-year institutions; 
  3. foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low-income and first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities; and
  4. improve the financial and economic literacy of students in areas such as basic personal income, household money management, financial planning skills and basic economic decision-making skills.

The mission of TRIO SSS is to have a positive impact on the educational success of 350 highly, motivated students through the delivery of personalized and dynamic services.  Students are selected to participate in the project based on the following criteria:

  • Qualification as a
    • low-income student as determined by the Federal Poverty Guidelines that are published annually
    • first-generation college student (neither of the student’s parents has earned a bachelor’s degree or higher)
    • student with a documented disability
    • high school diploma or GED recipient
    • U.S. citizen or U.S. national or meets the residency requirements for federal student financial assistance
    • student with a demonstrated academic need for assistance
    • student enrolled at Greenville Tech with a majority of classes on Greenville Tech’s Barton Campus
      • Initial date of college enrollment cannot exceed four years prior to the date of program application

Services Provided

The following services are available to all eligible participants at no cost:

  • Academic tutoring
  • Academic advising
  • Financial aid assistance
  • Financial and economic literacy training
  • College transfer assistance and campus visits
  • Career exploration
  • Exposure to cultural events not usually available to disadvantaged students
  • Grant aid

TRIO Upward Bound

The Greenville Technical College TRIO Upward Bound program is designed to provide services to 65 high school students. Upward Bound will assist students in increasing competencies and improving the academic skills necessary to complete a program of secondary education and to enter and succeed in a program of postsecondary education. Participants are recruited from the following four high schools in the Greenville County School District: Berea High School, Carolina High School and Academy, Southside High School, and Woodmont High School.

As a partner in the mission of TRIO programs at Greenville Technical College, the Upward Bound program provides support services to low-income and potential first-generation college students. Participants will be provided comprehensive and intensive academic, social, career, cultural, and motivational activities that assist students in preparing for postsecondary education. Collaborative efforts with Greenville Tech, school districts, public and private agencies, and businesses have been developed to maximize program resources and provide participants with intensive academic support to accomplish the following:

  1. Increase high school completion rates
  2. Provide services for underserved populations
  3. Improve academic competencies
  4. Increase postsecondary enrollment and completion rates

The Academic Component - Students attend Saturday classes twice a month on Greenville Tech's Barton Campus during the academic component. Classes are in the areas of mathematics, laboratory science, composition and literature, and foreign language.

The Summer Component - The summer component meets daily for six weeks. Students take classes in financial literacy, ACT/SAT preparation, and career exploration and participate in other cultural enrichment on Greenville Tech's Barton Campus for the first five weeks. The sixth week is usually devoted to a trip exposing the participants to college campuses and historical sites.
